Combining Photodynamic Therapy with Surgery in Treating Mesothelioma
The field of medicine is constantly bringing forward to light several innovative breakthroughs. Scientists are running all kinds of studies and trials in order to improve the quality of life of mesothelioma patients, and if possible to offer treatments that will cure this serious disease.

There are several mesothelioma clinical trials available where patients are welcome to enroll, and one of the most important is the trial called “Surgery and Photodynamic Therapy in Treating Patients with Malignant Mesothelioma”. In this trial, it is believed that cancer cells will be made more sensitive to light by applying photodynamic therapy, so these cancerous cells will be killed much easier. In addition, in order to make the treatment more effective, drug therapy is also used.

A possible extremely effective treatment for malignant mesothelioma is the combination of photodynamic therapy and drug therapy. This particular study is already a Phase II trial which is run to prove the effectiveness of this combination of light therapy with drug administration. Just as any other clinical trials for mesothelioma, this particular study has some well defined eligibility criteria.

The patient must make proof of the histologically confirmed malignant mesothelioma with the following cell types: sarcomatus, mixed mesothelial, disease confined to 1 hemithorax or no adenocarcinoma or nonmesotheliomasarcoma of the chest wall. This trial does not expose the patients to major health risks, as every little detail is extremely closely monitored by the medical staff and investigators of the study. Just make sure to study the trial description before you actually sign up to become a volunteer for any kind of medical study.
